A Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) worker was among customers disconnected by the authority yesterday for failing to pay the water bill...the WASA employee, who lives in Valsayn, owed almost $4,000, accumulated over three years....The disconnections began in San Fernando, with WASA's general manager, corporate communications Ellen Lewis and deputy manager Steve Joseph leading a team to Chrisholm Street, San Fernando, where a homeowner was disconnected for owing $70,000 over a 13-year period.

The disconnection campaign is part of a plan to recover $506 million owed to WASA by domestic and commercial customers. Domestic customers owe $356 million of that amount.
A customer at Endeavour, Chaguanas, was disconnected for failing to pay a bill that accumulated to $16,000 over ten years, and at Madras Street, St James, a business owner had his supply turned off for owing more than $33,000.
In Tobago, the Bethel Credit Union avoided disconnection after paying up its $11,498 bill.
Lewis said some businesses had "rushed and settled" their payments before they were disconnected.
Lewis said people disconnected will have to pay a reconnection fee of $500 and all outstanding money owed to the company before being reconnected.

The WASA campaign continues

On February 1, WASA began the collection drive in an effort to recover $506 million in outstanding rates from customers both commercial and residential. Some $356 million was owed by residential customers.
In a release issued on Tuesday, Lewis stated that disconnection was continuing in the areas of Eastern Main Road, Sangre Grande, Valencia, Sangre Chiquito, Manzanilla, Curepe, Arouca, Bon Air West, Macoya, El Dorado, Chase Village, Freeport, Cunupia, Charlieville, Pleasantville, Cocoyea, Ste Madeleine, Vistabella, Moriah, Mt Thomas, Mt Grace, Cinnamon Hill and Mason Hall.

Residents of New Grant/Tableland are threatening protest action if their pipe-borne water supply is not restored.
Over 11,000 residents have been without water for about 15 days now and they say no one, including the Water and Sewerage Authority seems to care.
This morning the villagers described the situation as bad, saying they are unable to cook, wash or even flush their toilets.
WASA has sent a truck borne water supply to the community, but the authority has been rationing water.
The residents are calling on Public Utilities Minister, Emmanuel George, WASA’s Line Minister, to organize the authority or resign.
Attempts to contact their Councillor Gory Roopnarine has proved futile, as they say their calls have not been answered or returned.
The residents are predicting a health hazard in the area if the situation is not addressed soon and they have promised mass protests will take place beginning on Friday.

and people saying we developed ! WHICH PART EH ! i really hope they do something about this situation because if people not able to cook and wash and clean then that means diseases !

Crime Alert WASA BANDITS... BE AWARE
There are some men, about four of them, purporting to be WASA employees, who are visiting houses, stating that they are there to conduct WASA checks, leaks, whatever.
They are carrying their concoction of a WASA ID and some are dressed in WASA "uniforms".
THEY ARE BANDITS!!!
Do not allow them into the yard far less into the house, not even with ID, because let's face it, does anyone of us know what a valid WASA ID looks like?

WASA personnel do not seek to enter homes as a rule, since their connections are on the outside.
Just tell them you have to call WASA's office to verify first.

Good news for workers of the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) as they are to receive a 10% salary increase along with an increase in the Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) after weeks of negotiations.
After wage talks broke down, the WASA negotiations were referred to the Industrial Court where a resolution was reached to allow for an increase in wages for WASA workers.
