A man who police believe masterminded the kidnapping of businessman Naail Ali in Gasparillo five days ago died in a police shootout in the Tabaquite forest at noon yesterday.

Rawle Charles was shot multiple times when, police said, he tried to shoot his way out of a house they surrounded. His leg was also broken.

Charles was dead before police could reach the Princes Town District Hospital.

As Charles, 26, was being taken away from his forest hideout, more police officers were swarming Watts Road, which links the Torrib Tabaquite Road to San Pedro, Poole, near Rio Claro.

Their target was a relative of Charles and in locating Ali. There are only a few houses along Watts Road, and they are used primarily by hunters.

The men who took Ali, 25, contacted the family at midnight on Wednesday. A relative said during the one-minute call, they established Ali was alive and the kidnappers asked for several million dollars.

The Alis own the A&S Furniture and Appliance Store at Parforce Road, Gasparillo. They have been holding daily prayer vigils for their relative's return.

Shortly after Ali was taken by three gunmen outside his father's hardware on Tuesday, police began focussing on the activities of three brothers who are known criminals.

Yesterday, a police helicopter provided cover for the raid.

The police report is that when they called Charles out of a house at Watts Road, Brother's Road, he emerged shooting and the Crime Suppression Unit and Southern Division Task Force answered with gunfire.

The Express was told that Charles, who was barefooted and in shorts, was shot several times in the face, neck and chest. Charles also had an address at Golconda Village, near San Fernando. A Nissan Almera car was seized as evidence.

A Toyota station wagon was reported used in the abduction that involved three men.

Villagers said Charles and several of his close associates were known criminals. They also said he would often visit his parents at their home deep in the forest.

The search of the forest continued last night. Late yesterday, crime scene experts went to the scene of the shooting, hoping to gather evidence that could lead to Ali.

I bet you'd notice that one kind of crime like a domestic murder suicide would lead into another a few days later and pretty soon it will look like one every day. And one shootout in laventille will lead to another in a few days. Thats the result of irresponsible media coverage. People think the police get stuff wrong- wait till they see a newspaper report and compare them to other media you'd see alot of inconsistency. Its crap like this that makes crime so much of a difficult problem, it makes crime look bigger than our ability to deal with it. Alot of the wording used in the papers make stuff sound like a horror story or like it worse than it really is. A murder happen in the bush were no one living and they choose the nearest town and say it happen there. And poor people freaking out when they shouldn't. A man got shot in the head they say it got blown off at point blank- do they really need to be that graphic? Who care if that true anyway. A woman got hit by a car- 'Car crushes woman' Dont they know that they're lying? Of course they do but fear and tragedy sells papers, and the more familiar we are with the names or places the more we listen.
The goverment and opposition finally agree on something and the headline is ' 57 MILLION MORE ON OBSCURE CRIME BILL' and the the paragraph would be like ' yet another 57 million... ' to make it sound like a waste. Wonder why the country is going to hell? Its not, not yet anyway. It's not as bad as it seems it the media who's making it that hopeless. Somehow they think that people dont want to feel good about the chances of our country.

U can say it's not Tabaquite, it could be true... Tabaquite is a big area.. Tabaquite Road Via Rio Claro, Tabaquite Road Via Guaracara....Very forested area.... It may not be Tabaquite itself but the outskirt of the area....

Yes but most people don't know that these places have names as you said "Tabaquite Road Via Rio Claro, Tabaquite Road Via Guaracara" call it the places by the right name why make the shortout

Yeah sometimes the difference is only a few miles but it does be completly different places. Some communities does be loss when they see thier name on tv or papers and they know nothing happen. :) . But then they might find it easier to say the overall place than a specific name assuming that people would know its not a small place.
