Government Minister Fazal Karim returned to the country from an official overseas trip on Sunday, only to be told that his relative, Neeshad Ali, was brutally murdered and his wife and child kidnapped from their Carapichaima home.
Karim, Minister of Science, Technology and Tertiary Education, yesterday expressed shock and horror over the incident which led to the death of his second cousin, who often referred to him as "uncle". He called for swift and effective justice in the matter.
Today marks one week after Ali got married. He is expected to be laid to rest later today under Muslim rites.
Karim said he taught Ali business studies while the victim was a pupil at the Carapichaima Secondary School.
He was speaking with reporters at the Forensic Science Centre in St James yesterday, while relatives were waiting on undertakers to bring Ali's body to the facility for a post mortem.
Karim's call for swift justice in the matter was echoed by Ali's father Shan, a 67-year-old retired school teacher and the victim's only brother, Naeem, 25. "We support Minister Jack Warner's call to resume hanging," Shan said.
Ali, a 37-year-old accountant, was found in a pool of blood at his home on Sunday afternoon. His assailants later kidnapped his wife, Laila and the couple's one-year-old daughter, Alia. Laila was forced to drive her car out of the area, which was later found by police abandoned in Marabella.
The abductors telephoned Ali's mother, Carol Lee Ahyen, and demanded a $100,000 ransom for the victim's safe return, but no money was paid. The men told Lee Ahyen that they knew her entire family and warned her about getting the police involved.
Hours later, police officers stormed a house at Orange Field Road in Carapichaima and rescued the mother and daughter who were locked in a room.
Six suspects, among them three women, were arrested by police and up to late yesterday, were being questioned at the Region III Homicide Bureau of Investigations in San Fernando.
Two of the men were identified as the painters who Ali had earlier hired to do a job at the back porch of his home.
Acting Snr Supt David Abraham, head of the Homicide Bureau and Ag ASP Jayson Forde have recorded statements from the suspects, who are expected to be placed on identification parades.
Laila, a hairdresser, and her daughter remained in protective custody up to late yesterday. Relatives have not been able to speak with them since they were rescued by police on Sunday night.
Karim, who was part of a delegation led by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar to the United States at the weekend, described the incident as unfortunate, saying the time has come for serious action to be taken in order to effectively deal with the crime situation in the country.
Karim said, "I think it's time the country takes a swift look at how justice must be dealt with, with these people. While we would commend the police in having custody of the people who would have committed this crime, there's no substitute for life."
He said crimes of such a nature were not prevalent in the Carapichaima community.
"We never knew these kinds of crime in Carapichaima. And obviously, these things are committed by people who come into your house to work and see what you have and just decide they want what you have. They are not prepared to work for it.
"This society must change and it must respond to it, and justice as I said must be swift, and this is not only because he is my cousin. This is because all those people who have been killed."
"We (the Government) are going to do our best as far as possible to rid the country of this level of insecurity. The criminals are running haywire in this country and that has to be stopped," Karim said.
Relatives are hoping that Ali's wife and child are allowed by police to attend his funeral which takes place today at 1 p.m., at the victim's father's house in Waterloo, Carapichaima. After the funeral service, Ali will be laid to rest at the Waterloo Muslim Cemetery.
A post mortem revealed the victim bled to death after a ruptured windpipe and main arteries . "They cut right down like a chicken," Shan said after he positively identified his son's body yesterday at the Forensic Science Centre.
He expressed his gratitude to the police for the response his family received in the matter. "I am convinced there is a change in the force (Police Service) right now. Even the CID were very anxious to have some closure in the matter, but I only hope that they follow through, and quick justice is served," Shan said.
Relatives, he said, have not been able to enter the house since the incident on the instructions of police who were not finished with processing the crime scene.
The incident occurred between 10.a.m. and midday on Sunday at the back porch downstairs the victim's two-storey home at Wohler's Boulevard, Friendship Hall Drive, off McLeod Trace.
A family member stumbled upon Ali's body just after midday, when the relative went to the residence. The police were called and checks were made for Laila and Alia, but they could not be found.

People so dotish, they botch the kidnapping by killing the man and they still retarded enough to kidnap he wife and daughter! I give Trinidad criminals too much credit, this is the most ridiculous thing i've seen.
And it had so many people involved! : :Throw:
