A serial burglar who stole equipment valued at $24,500 from a poultry depot has been jailed by a Couva magistrate for five years.

Ishmeed Mohammed, 30, of Teelucksingh Street East, California, who does odd jobs in his community, pleaded guilty to shop breaking and larceny.

The court heard that the owner secured the business, Rawle’s Poultry Depot in McBean Village, Couva, around 6.30 pm on June 11 and left. When she returned the following day around 6.30 am, prosecutor Sgt Lincoln Bonnett said she noticed a gate pried open. She then discovered a meat cutter valued at $20,000 and nine gas tanks valued at $4,500 missing.

PC Ramoutar, of the Couva CID, conducted inquiries and arrested Mohammed on Saturday near his home.

Mohammed told Couva Magistrate Wendy Dougdeen-Bally that he stole the items to sell to support his drug addiction. Bonnett produced his criminal record which showed he had more than 15 previous convictions, of which several were for similar offences.

In the same court, Knaguse Simon, 20, a scavenger at the Forres Park landfill at Claxton Bay, pleaded guilty to robbing a man of his cell phone. Bonnett said the man was walking along Forres Park Dump Road on June 14 when Simon accosted him with a knife and stole his cellphone.

Simon, a first-time offender, was sentenced to three months in jail.
