A COUVA mother who allegedly faked the kidnapping of her 11-year-old daughter on Monday, yesterday appeared before a Couva Magistrate to answer a charge of wasting police time.
Sumitra Koon, 29, of Mango Alley, Calcutta No 3 and her sister-in-law Diane Ragoonath, 35, were charged with wasting police time when on Monday they reported to police that 11-year-old Daniella Koon had been kidnapped from in front her home at Mango Alley at about 5 pm.
Koon and Ragoonath who were arrested Tuesday evening and taken into custody at the Couva Police Station, were each granted bail in the sum of $50,000.
The charge arose from an incident on Monday in which Koon is alleged to have locked her daughter at the home of her sister-in-law Ragoonath.
Koon then allegedly went to the Couva Police Station and filed a report that her daughter was kidnapped by a group of men at about 5pm. A party of police officers combed the area at the family’s home for several hours.
The women were then escorted by a female police officer into the holding area. Up to yesterday they were still being held in custody as their applications were being processed. The case was adjourned to next Monday.
