illegals still on the run
Wednesday, February 24th 2010

THE four Vietnamese national who escaped from the Immigration Detention Centre on Monday are still at large.

If and when the men are re-captured all they would get is a stern warning since they cannot be charged with escaping legal custody, police said yesterday.

According to police, the four men, Tran Xuan-Tinn, Tran Xuan-Dang, Tran Ven-Gong and Nguyen Ziet-Toan, who escaped from the recently-opened Immigration Detention Centre in Aripo, did not commit any crime and therefore cannot be charged.

The Detention Centre is regarded as just a ’holding bay’, police said, adding that it is not a prison as a result the escapees cannot be described as armed and dangerous.

The four men were being housed at the detention centre to be deported to their native land because they overstayed their welcome in this country.

They were among six men who scaled the barbed-wire fence during the wee hours of Monday morning.

Two were re-captured. One, an Iranian national awaiting extradition, was held just outside the facility entangled in barbed wire, while the other, a Guyanese national, was held in the Rio Claro forest some four hours after the escape.

? Dont You think... you need to be a criminal and have weapons to be armed and dangerous... it has nothing to do with the level of security you escaped from?

Yeh, I always wonder how the ass these people does make it here, especially when they come by alternative means i.e. a fishing boat they sail across the Atlantic!

and ah doh want no illegal Haitians here either!!! let them stay rite dey an live an d world will help ........doh come here

are you guys against Illegal Immigration or Immigration ??..We have alot of Trinis living in T&T who have parents or Grandparents from Guyana, Grenada, St Vincent..etc

Yep i know a lady who's grandparents sailed in a little dingy boat from Puerto Rico to trinidad so i have nothing on them. The level of security in a detention centre sucks for them to get away. More Measures should be put into place like more security because this goes to show that a little detention center cannot even hold unarmed imigrants

I think RauCous was talking mainly about ILLEGAL immigration (although I believe all immigration starts as illegal immigration until papers are filed.) Our systems aren't nearly as functional as they should be, and these people are most times reported to be caught, otherwise they would be living normally in our society. I don't have anything against immigration as long as the people coming in want to make a better life for themselves in a civil manner and contribute successfully.

but what kind of new system do you guys think we should have ?..should we have Legal immigrants holding some type of document (like what America does with a Green Card)..What if a Trinidadian marry a foreigner then how would the foreigner prove she/he is legal ?..What current national document do we have in place..??

Well if he married a foreigner, I believe a marriage certificate would be sufficient. I don't think we need a new system, just an updated system to follow up on people that overstay on their visits to our country.

What is teh current system we have now that needs to be updated ?..Do they just have names of file from airport authorities of people who overstay their time in the country based on the date they came into the country ?..and thats the current system ?

I believe they're just using the names on the Customs database to monitor visitors when they check in/check out of the country. I don't know for sure but I have never heard anyone being prosecuted in this country for violating their terms of visitation.

d authorities should take ah look at d illegal street vendors in POS an Chag who from Guyana an d other caribbean island an now dey usingd CSME as an excuse...

Yep there are alot of guyanese in chag selling from vehicles at the side of the road and taking up locals in the places at the old health centre ..police should be investigating this because it can cause alot of tension in these areas especially if our locals are being cut off from selling
