One of the boats which took part in this year's Carib Great Race was missing last night. Another vessel, a Trinidad and Tobago Powerboats Association (TTPBA) patrol boat , had also disappeared.

Hero II, a three-time champion in the Pirogue Class of the race, and the patrol boat, went missing after stormy weather rocked the country after Saturday's race.

They were moored at Store Bay. The boats and equipment were valued at a total of more than $500,000.

Police were called in after the boats were discovered missing yesterday morning.

Sources connected to Hero II, which finished fourth in its class, told the Express that the 28-foot Hero Boodram-owned Bowen vessel was tied to the TTPBA patrol boat in Store Bay on Saturday night after they completed the 95-mile endurance race.

"The boat was refuelled and ready to go back to Trinidad," the source said, "and both vessels were secured in the bay".

"There were a lot of people here (Store Bay) last night (Saturday night), and it is ridiculous and absurd that two boats could just disappear without anybody knowing where they have gone because there were about 20 other boats tied up in the bay," the source lamented.

Police and Coast Guard were out searching for the boats but TTPBA president Alfred Bell believes that there was not enough evident to suggest that the boats were stolen.

"Both vessels were set properly but the weather was bad in Store Bay last night (Saturday night)," Bell said.

"It is a big loss for us. The patrol boat had all of our safety equipment approximately $100,000 and the cost of the boat itself is about $300,000.

"This reflects bad on us...it is a terrible blow for the Association," the TTPBA boss said.

Boodram said that the Hero II took part in six Carib Great Race events and won its class three years in a row and that he is offering a reward for information leading to the recovery of the vessel.
