AN alleged bandit died hours after being shot by a businessman, who, apparently fed up of being robbed, decided to spend the nights at his Sangre Grande business place.

The Express was told that around 8 p.m. on Tuesday night, Paul Manickchand, 68, had settled down to sleep at his business place, Cocoa and Coffee Produce, located along the Eastern Main Road, Sangre Grande, around 8 p.m.

Sometime around 2 a.m., after hearing a noise, he armed himself with his shotgun and went to investigate. He met a man, later identified as Sheldon John, 24, of Turure Village, Sangre Grande.

The proprietor allegedly called on the man to stop, but he instead approached him menacingly and the businessmen shot him once. He then called the police. John was taken to the Sangre Grande District Hospital, but died at 10.40 a.m. yesterday.

A team of detectives led by Insp Fermin Roy, along with Sgt Beverly Paul, Cpl Christopher Fuentes and PC Kerry Ramnarine visited the scene and conducted enquiries.

A post-mortem is to be done today at the Forensic Science Centre in St James. -GG
