Police officers from the Central Division have pledged their full support for new Police Commissioner Gary Griffith.

The announcement was made by ASP Richard Smith during Thursday night’s inter agency meeting to address social and economic issues in the borough. The meeting was hosted by the Chaguanas Borough Corporation and took place at the corporation’s administrative complex at Cumberbatch Street.

Some people at the meeting raised concerns as to whether the police would adopt a work-to-rule approach because of possible ill-feelings towards the new commissioner.

But Smith said, “We have a new commissioner and we would continue to serve the nation as best as we can, we don’t look at personality, we look at our job and our job is to keep T&T safe and we will keep T&T safe despite who comes as commissioner. We welcome Mr Griffith and we pledge our support to him from the Central Division.”

Smith said in order to deal with the traffic problem, patrols would be in place at the two roundabouts in the Price Plaza area on mornings and evenings. He said as soon as resources become available, a mobile police post would be established in that area.

Smith said the Chaguanas police officers would also engage in customer service training and training to deal with violence in hot spot areas.

He said training has become necessary because the Central Division has received complaints that police officers were being too aggressive with members of the public.

He said psychologists and representatives from the US embassy, who did a tour of duty in Afghanistan, would also be lecturing to the police.

Chaguanas mayor Gopaul Boodhan said he wants to see more patrols in traffic prone areas especially at Endeavour Road, Caroni Savannah Road and the Montrose Main Road.

Boodhan also warned shoppers in the area to guard their cash while shopping for the new school term.

He said while additional police would be on patrol in the area, caution is always needed.

“People should always shop in groups and be aware of their surroundings. I am also asking private security to work alongside law enforcement to keep a third eye out for illegal behaviour, he added.
