Are security officers police now?

Why is it that from time to time you witness or view on social media, Security officers abusing their authority and acting as if they are bloody police officers. They have been filmed beating up people , pulling out their firearm for persons, breaking the road traffic laws and much more. Where do these people get off, when you look at some of the security firms qualifications, to become a security officer you will see their are none. No background checks and education qualifications and so on are required. I personally know of a few people who were locked up for rape and other crimes and now working in amalgamated and Heller security company etc. Why is nothing being done to regulate this industry, why is it that they feel they can abuse their authority?
