A 25-year-old female employee of the Family Court and two of her teenaged neighbours have appeared in court charged with murdering a pharmacist during a botched car jacking in March.
Shanice Alleyne and 19-year-olds Christon “Ton” Lovelace and Runako Mayers, all of Morvant, appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Maria Busby Earle-Caddle yesterday charged with killing 65-year-old Nicholas George on March 3.
Lovelace was slapped with additional charges of possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.
Before the trio was remanded into custody, Alleyne’s lawyer Christian Chandler complained that homicide detectives had failed to provide a summary of evidence against them as required under the recently introduced Criminal Procedure Rules. Court prosecutor Insp Winston Dillon asked the court to adjourn the case for six weeks to give investigators enough time to complete the case file and transfer it to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for disclosure.
During the hearing, Chandler also informed the court that his client is 12 weeks pregnant. As she is likely to be on remand for several years before facing trial, the baby would have to be left in the custody of her relatives after it is born.
Chandler said his client was detained for eight days in March before being released without charge. Alleyne and the teens were rearrested last week.
He also complained that police had impounded her car during their investigation and requested that it be immediately returned to her relatives unless it is to be used as evidence in the case.
Busby-Earle-Caddle agreed and granted the requested order for the release of the car.
Busby-Earle-Caddle adjourned Alleyne’s case to May 29 and the teens’ to June 11 based on Chandler’s request for a short adjournment to follow up on disclosure.
According to reports, George was ambushed as he drove into his driveway at Wendy Fitzwilliam Boulevard, Diego Martin.
An attempt was made to rob him of his Hyundai Tuscon but was shot as he put up a struggle. His attackers then left empty handed.
Mayers was represented by Criston J Williams and Shirvani Ramkissoon while Sean Guerra represented Lovelace.
