T&TEC clarifies policy on lighting recreation grounds

The Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC) is clarifying various statements that have been made in the public regarding the Commission’s policies for lighting of recreation grounds.

"Within recent months T&TEC has been receiving an increased number of requests from citizens, community groups, and regional corporations to extend the time for recreational ground lighting for an additional two to four hours beyond the normal 9:00 pm cut off. The Commission is fully aware of its obligation to society as it relates to nation building in areas such as crime reduction, promoting healthy lifestyles, building communities, promoting a caring society through socialization etc. and, as such, it has always treated such requests with due thoughtfulness," a release from Communications Manager Annabelle Brasnell said.

The release said requests are typically granted an extension up to 10.30 pm.

Brasnell said with respect to the recent Ramleela celebrations, T&TEC posted personnel on sites during the celebrations to ensure that, should the lights be required beyond the approved 10.30 pm, an adjustment could be made.

She said this additional extension was required on the last two nights of the event.

"Finally, T&TEC is putting additional plans in place to continue to serve the needs of the public as it relates to the lighting of recreation grounds, while effectively managing the resources needed for this service," she said.

Last week, organisers of the Pierre Road Ramleela group
were upset when lights were cut off before the end of their activities.

They said an application was made for permission to have lights be turned on until 12pm for the duration of Ramleela celebrations in September. However, lights were shut off shortly after 10 pm.

Despite T&TEC's
assurance that measures have been taken to ensure the requisite lighting is put in place at the Recreational Ground for the duration of the celebrations, Councillor for the Charlieville area, Faaiq Mohammed, revealed that he, along with Chaguanas Mayor Gopaul Boodhan made arrangements with Richie Sookhai of Sookhai Diesel Services to have two mobile lighting towers placed at the Recreation Ground to aid in the remainder of Ramleela Celebrations.
