One of three cousins involved in a shootout with the police in Fyzabad on Friday is in a critical condition at hospital. He and his two relatives, of Delhi Road, Fyzabad, are warded under police guard at the San Fernando General Hospital.
Police said the suspects attempted to steal a car sometime after 6 pm on Friday, which led to a high-speed chase with officers in a white sports utility vehicle.
According to a release from the TTPS, around 6.45 pm, officers of the Fyzabad Police Station received a wireless communication about a shooting in progress at John Jules Trace. When they got to the area, the officers saw a brown Nissan Latio car being chased by officers in a white SUV. The Fyzabad officers joined in the chase along with officers from the Oropouche Police Station and the car was intercepted at Ramatally Park.
According to the report, the suspects fired at the officers who returned fire. A video circulating on social media shows the police surrounding the car, which was riddled with bullets. Two of the suspects were seen lying on the ground. Several Facebook users commended the police for apprehending the suspects.
Police recovered a Smith and Wesson pistol loaded with a magazine containing two rounds of 9mm ammo in the back seat of the vehicle.
Police said once released the men will be charged with several offences arising out of the incident. Siparia West-Fyzabad councillor Maurice Alexander said there has been an increase in criminal activity in the community but the police have been doing a good job.
“I know for a fact that the police in our community are doing some really good work. We have seen an increase in spot checks and police visibility in the community,” he said.
Alexander’s father, Hicks, 67, who is a taxi driver, was shot in the face two weeks ago at his Siparia home after he refused to give an intruder the keys to his car. Alexander said his father resumed work last Friday. The shooter remains at large.
