The murder toll increased yesterday following the deaths of two men in separate incidents - one of which involved police shooting at a mentally unstable person.
In the first incident, around 3 am at Mellow Moods Bar, Saddle Road, San Juan, Kareem Wilson became embroiled in an argument with another patron that escalated into a fight. The man left but reportedly returned a short while after with two others, one of whom was armed.
The trio allegedly approached the 29-year-old Wilson and a second fight started before one of the men pulled out a gun and shot him several times before fleeing the scene. Wilson, of San Juan, was rushed to hospital by onlookers but succumbed to his injuries around 5.30 am at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope, while undergoing emergency surgery. Investigators are said to be reviewing CCTV footage in a bid to identify the gunman and his accomplices.
In the second incident, around 10 am Kevin Lewis, 26, of Ariapita Road, St Ann’s, was shot by police after he allegedly attacked officers.
Reports indicate that officers were called to the area after residents complained of a man brandishing a cutlass and causing damage to property.
Lewis reportedly ignored repeated requests to drop the cutlass and surrender to officers peacefully and was shot as he rushed towards them. He died on the spot. Investigations are continuing.
