In a bid to comfort his colleagues who were retrenched from the University of T&T (UTT) on Friday, UTT instructor Rolly Dominic Hosein has reached out to offer motivation to them.
Hosein, who is part of the university’s Foundations and Prior Learning Unit, said retrenchment can be a devastating thing for any worker. The physical reactions anticipated could include burnout, disruption of sleep, worry and depression, he noted.
“It is easy to go into denial…you may feel embarrassed or hurt…asking “why me!” and the feeling of unfair treatment will cross your mind, you may have so many questions but it really is a waste of precious time. You need to get back on track and you can’t afford to stay down for too long,” Hosein said.
He urged his retrenched colleagues to see what are the current skills needed in the market today and, “go and get trained and explore some of your talents and how it can be used to earn. Volunteering can also be an opportunity to learn and network for prospective employment opportunities.”
“Your résumé or CV is an extremely important tool. Most of us here at the UTT have vast experience and this I’m sure would be an asset in many instances. Take your time and tailor your CV for the position that you may seek. Know your worth and be confident that you will land something soon,” he advised colleagues.
Hosein said he strongly believes their retrenchment came “with no malice” and advised that they get the necessary recommendations to use as tools for future work.
“You should ask your past supervisor for a letter of recommendation outlining your accomplishments as an employee, your skills. An explanation of retrenchment can be offered because it is no fault of yours. Many highly skilled, qualified and experienced workers are cut in these instances. The bottom line, dust yourself off and get back on track,” Hosein said, describing the situation as “turbulent and troubled.”
On Friday, about 30 of UTT’s academic staff were given retrenchment letters as the university started a cost-cutting drive due to reduced government subvention. A total of 125 academic staff are expected to go home. The retrenched workers are vowing to seek legal redress.
