BREAKING NEWS UPDATE 12:30PM
THE GUNS and a grenade used by three prisoners , as they shot their way out of the Port of Spain Prison on Friday, was likely delivered to them by people who visited earlier in the day. One of the guns was used to shoot Constable Sherman Maynard after the prisoners pulled the guns inside prison walls and ordered prison guards to open the door leading to freedom.
Outside the prison, they fired on police officers, ,mortally wounding PC Maynard, before getting into a waiting Nissan Navarra that left the area carrying escapees Allan “Skanny” Martin, Hassan Atwell, 41, and Christopher “Monster” Selby, 30. The escape was staged at around 12.30p.m.
However, the getaway vehicle crashed into a wall near the Port of Spain General Hospital, when police vehicles began converging. The occupants ran through the hospital's compound. Martin was cornered inside the hospital's guard booth. Cell phone video of incident show police officers converging on the guard booth and firing a volley of shots. There are photographs of Martin apparently dead on the floor, with a handgun at his side. A second photograph, showing a close up of his face, is taken when his body is placed on a stretcher. A 43-year-old man, said to have helped in the escape, has been detained. However, as of 6p.m. Friday, Atwell and Selby had eluded capture with the police using all available resources to locate them.
Martin and Selby were among 12 men in trial for the murder of Chaguanas businessman Vindra Naipaul Coolman. She was kidnapped and killed in December 2006. The trial began in March 2014. Earlier this week, the judge hearing the case said the trial would be adjourned to September 17. Atwell, originally of Pleasantville, is awaiting trial for kidnapping, possession of firearm, robbery and sexual assault.

UPDATE #6
PM Of our country decided to update the country via facebook and twitter telling our citizens not to panick and that the nation is not under threat. Here is what she had to say
TATEMENT OF PRIME MINISTER KAMLA PERSAD BISSESSAR AT THE NATIONAL OPERATIONS CENTRE As today’s events unfold I want to provide reassurance to the people of Trinidad and Tobago.
The public disorder we have witnessed in Port of Spain is deplorable and those responsible will face the full force of the law.
There has been loss of life and this will not be tolerated.
It is especially tragic that police officer who lost his life was a law enforcement officer who was bravely performing his job and serving the public and his country.
I extend our sincerest condolences to the family of PC Sherman Maynard.
I want our citizens to be very clear that so long as I am your Prime Minister you have nothing to fear.
Today’s disorder is confined to Port of Spain and is being dealt with effectively.
I have been in constant communication with the National Operations Centre, and am confident that the National Security agencies are in full control of the situation.
Your Government is of course in full control and dealing firmly, speedily and appropriately with what is unfolding.
Immediate measures that have been taken include:
- All prison installations are secured and members of the Prison Service, supported by the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force, have been deployed to secure the perimeter of the prisons.
The Prison authorities have assured us that there is calm among the prison population.
- All ports of entry are being monitored and placed on high alert as the search for the escapees continue.
- All medical facilities have been mandated to alert the Protective Services of anyone with gunshot wounds.
I will provide further information as I am able to do so but be reassured this unacceptable episode in Port of Spain is being dealt with.
Once again I assure the population of Trinidad and Tobago that the Security Services have the situation firmly in hand and there is no need for fear or panic.
The authorities will keep the nation updated as developments unfold.
Any citizen with information relating to this matter is advised to call 999 or contact the nearest police station.
