My folks wanted to take a trip to Barbados and their flights were cancelled because of this strike. if you saw how much people were quarelling in the airport because they booked hotels and now they cannot even fly out of tini.
Flights on regional carrier Liat from Port of Spain to the southern Caribbean were cancelled yesterday.
More than ten Liat flights were cancelled, affecting dozens of passengers leaving Trinidad and Tobago.
Liat officials said the flights were cancelled ’after pilots throughout the network initiated industrial action by calling in sick (yesterday)’.
The pilots are said to be protesting unsettled wage disputes.
Liat’s website showed that all flights leaving Piarco to Barbados, from as early as 5.30 a.m. were listed as ’sold out’ yesterday.
Some had stopovers in Grenada, St Vincent and the Grenadines and St Lucia.
Liat communications manager Desmond Brown said one of Liat’s smaller carriers carried 37 people while the larger aircraft accommodates 50 passengers.
He confirmed that all Liat flights out of Piarco International Airport were cancelled yesterday.
He could not say how many passengers were leaving on each flight from Trinidad.
Liat said in a statement later yesterday that ’affected passengers will be allowed to rebook without any additional fees’.
’Passengers who no longer wish to travel as planned, due to the disruption, will be issued a full credit for future travel on Liat,’ the airline added.
Brown told the Express yesterday he did not know when the situation with the pilots would change.
During a phone interview, he said: ’A few passengers were accommodated by Caribbean Airlines but that cannot be done for most, as the routes are different.’
