Panday plans to fight Jack as independent candidate
Louis B Homer South Bureau
Wednesday, April 14th 2010

Basdeo Panday, who has lost the chance to be a candidate for the Couva North constituency he represented for 34 years, still has political aspirations.

He said yesterday he was considering running as an independent candidate.

And the only person he would run against would be Jack Warner.

Panday, 76, also, believes the United National Congress (UNC), under leadership of Kamla Persad Bissessar, has a good chance of winning government.

Panday’s failure to submit nomination papers by Monday’s deadline means his career as an elected politician is all but over.

But he said yesterday, ’I am planning to fight Jack Warner as an independent in any seat that he intends to contest.’

Panday said the reason he will oppose Warner in the election is, ’I don’t want to inflict Warner anymore on the people of Trinidad and Tobago.’

Panday said, ’Contrary to the general belief that I am quitting politics, let me tell you, I did not say I am not going to contest the election. I am considering my option to fight against Jack Warner as an independent, at any stage he is nominated by the party to fight.’

Panday gave a reason for not filing nomination papers.

’Do you think I should be screened by Jack Warner, a man for whom I do not have any respect? No. It will be humiliating’.

He said Warner should not only be removed from the screening committee...he should be removed completely from the UNC. Why should I inflict Warner on the electorate?’ he asked. Panday said during his campaign he would tell voters all he knew about Warner.

When asked why he has such bitter feelings against Warner, Panday said, ’It all has to do with the thirty million dollars...’

UNC Deputy Political Leader Suruj Rambachan and party activist Sunil Ramjitsingh are to be screened for the Couva North seat.

This is interesting, i'd like to see a chart of the votes, how will people choose?

and i bet you Panday will get THOUSANDS of votes..honestly the people who are die hard Panday supporters i see them no different from the die hard Manning supporters

@San Fernando..Very true. I couldn't have put it better myself.

i beg to differ dis time!!! not dis election....Panday will c d UNC voters votin UNC not ah independent.....bg mistake Bas!!!

Agreed with madsuya. I think Panday's political career has run its course. I mean just look at the UNC internal elections. He barely got votes. So to say now that he is going to get votes in a general election as an independent candidate? Highly improbable.

Don't know much what the central ppl willl do in a situation like this but Jack really did alot for them for the past couples of years...

James Mohammed, a nephew of former prime minister Basdeo Panday, is poised to launch a new political party to contest the upcoming local government elections and challenge the United National Congress (UNC) for control of its “safe” regional corporations...Mohammed is now president of the Movement for Democracy and Constitutional Reform, a new political pressure group which he formed together with other Generation Next activists...he intend to launch the party formally with an eye on the upcoming local government elections...he already had 25 candidates willing to contest the elections and the movement would contest electoral districts in the Princes Town, Penal/Debe, Siparia, Couva/Tabaquite/Talparo and Tunapuna Regional corporations and he hopes he will make an impact!!!
