THE nation has become numb to murders, while criminals have become more brazen.

This was the general reaction at the scene of the country's latest shooting death in the capital city yesterday.

The victim, 57-year-old Junior "Tom" Small, of Laventille Road, Laventille, was shot dead in broad daylight on George Street, Port of Spain, opposite the Plannings.

And as Small's body lay face-up in a drain with a single gunshot wound to the back of his head, it was business as usual for nearby vendors and store owners.

The majority of curious onlookers were also unfazed by the 3 o'clock shooting.

When approached by the Express at the scene yesterday, one man said, "This is nothing new, they kill a man in the bar right there the other day."

On May 22, Steve Morgan, 36, of Old St Joseph Road, Wharton Street, Laventille, was shot dead at the Lucky Jordan Pub on Prince Street. The pub where Morgan was killed is a few footsteps from where Small was gunned down yesterday. Both killings happened in broad daylight.

Another woman added, "And they kill a woman earlier this week too."

She was referring to the death of Adafih Sozufe, 22, of McShine Lands, Laventille, who was shot dead around 7.45 p.m. while standing near the corner of Duncan Street and Independence Square, Port of Spain, on Monday.

However, the indifference of onlookers was broken by the screams of Small's daughter Neisha.

"Why God, why daddy!" Neisha screamed while being comforted by relatives near the police tape cordoning off the crime scene.

Reports are that Small was shot once in the back of his head while walking up George Street.

The killing was motivated by robbery, police said. Small, who was known for wearing a lot of jewelry, including several gold chains, was left with only one ring on his left hand.

After the fatal shooting, the lone gunman ran off along Prince Street, police said.

The death of Small has pushed the murder toll to 336 for the year. Investigations are continuing.
