One day after a 24-year-old man reported to police that he received death threats, he was stabbed to death with an icepick at his Chaguanas home.
Relatives of IT technician Nicholas Narine are blaming his death on the police inaction.
“The same people were threatening him the day before and he made a report, but the police did not do anything,” said his mother Marilyn Narine.
According to a police report, around 11 pm on Saturday, Nicholas was at his Perseverance Village home when he got into an argument with a 21-year-old man.
The man pulled out an icepick and stabbed Narine several times.
Narine’s distraught mother said her son had asked the suspect to return a speaker box he had given to him.
She recalled that she was in the back room when her son opened the front door for the suspect. “He (suspect) came with the speaker box. All I hear is ‘Mummy, mummy help, help.’”
When she ran to the front, she saw the suspect repeatedly stabbing her son. “I say what you doing my son, boy,” she said.
The suspect ran off.
Nicholas called his girlfriend telling her to come over because he had been stabbed. He then went to the bathroom to wash off the blood, but there was no water.
Nicholas died on the floor of the bathroom before the ambulance arrived.
Marilyn said her son and the suspect grew up together and were friends. She said when the suspect was put out of his home her son allowed him to stay with them.
“The two families had a dispute, but my son never expected something like this to happen. Otherwise he would not have opened the door for him,” she said.
Marilyn said the suspect’s relatives had also reported to the police her son had threatened them.
“They did not take the report seriously,” said the mother.
Nicholas was an IT technician and bought and sold phones. She said Nicholas helped her pay the bills.
Her husband died three years ago. “He was trying to get his Green Card. He wanted to go abroad to study the same IT. This is shocking. I feel like I am still dreaming,” Marilyn said.
Freeport police are investigating.
