INSANITY
BY RHONDOR DOWLAT Saturday, January 15 2011
IN WHAT can only be described as a moment of insanity, a private-hire “PH†taxi driver, who worked the Port-of-Spain to Chaguanas route, was knocked down and run over twice and killed by another PH driver shortly before midnight on Thursday near Busy Corner in Chaguanas.
The murder occurred after a quarrel between both drivers at the Chaguanas taxi stand at Broadway in Port-of-Spain.
The victim has been identified as Terrence Waldron, 44, originally from Belmont but who lived in Longdenville, Chaguanas. After committing murder, the other PH driver walked into the charge room of the Chaguanas Police Station and surrendered to police. Up to late last night he remained in police custody.
Hours after news spread of Waldron’s death, fellow PH and regular taxi drivers parked their vehicles near Busy Corner in a show of solidarity. They lighted candles along the Old Southern Main Road and Chaguanas Main Road in memory of Waldron.
According to police, at the taxi stand in Port-of-Spain a passenger chose Waldron’s car to travel to Chaguanas instead of the other PH driver. The driver who was snubbed, gave Waldron some picong telling him that he (Waldron) had “jumbie him†(poached his passenger). The picong led to a brief quarrel before Waldron got in his car and drove off.
The snubbed PH driver, police said, jumped in his car and sped after Waldron even giving him several “bad drives†all the way from Port-of-Spain to Busy Corner. On reaching Chaguanas, the snubbed PH driver stopped his car a short distance from Waldron’s car and waited for him to alight from it.
Several eyewitnesses told police that as soon as Waldron came out of his car and stood on the road near some concrete barriers, the snubbed driver sped towards Waldron, knocked him down and drove the car over Waldron’s body.
As a bleeding Waldron tried to get up, the enraged driver put his car in the reverse gear and ran over Waldron a second time. He then sped off. Waldron was taken to the Chaguanas Health Facility where he died while undergoing treatment.
Police sources said the driver, after surrendering, claimed Waldron threatened him by saying he (Waldron) had something for him. The driver told police he knocked down and killed Waldron because he feared for his life and was afraid of what Waldron had for him.
Shocked taxi drivers described Waldron as a very quiet person who interfered with no one and ensured that his passengers reached either Port-of-Spain or Chaguanas safely. A driver claimed that the PH taxi driver who knocked down Waldron, used to work along the Chaguanas/St Mary’s/short-drop route and left that stand because he could never get along with other drivers.
“That man always gave trouble and always tried to get under our skin with his stupid behaviour and hostile attitude. Look at what he gone and do now. He knocked down the man not once but twice...he killed a good man,†cried a taxi driver who asked not to be identified.
At one time, police sources said, Waldron was on their Most Wanted list for robberies and for even escaping lawful custody.
A taxi driver who knew Waldron very well, said that he (Waldron) counselled other drivers saying that while he was in prison, he accepted Christ as his personal Saviour and turned his life around.
In 2001, Waldron was released and aligned himself with the Miracle Ministries in Chase Village with guidance from Pastor Dr Rev Winston Cuffie and also joined the Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) Vision on Mission, mentoring to ex-convicts. President of the PH Auxiliary Transport Association Gerard Whyms yesterday condemned Waldron’s murder and said his association will liaise with the authorities to ensure that any PH driver involved in crime will be dealt with.
