The Fire Services yesterday added 15 new vehicles to its fleet, including a luxury Lexus sedan and high-end SUVs, none of which are needed to douse flames.
These vehicles, which cost $4,030,647, were bought from Southern Sales by the Ministry of National Security.
They come fully equipped with MP3 players, USBs, air-conditioning and GPS.
However, with all these luxuries, the service is grappling with the need for fire-fighting equipment at several fire stations across T&T.
Yesterday, president of the Fire Services Association Leo Ramkissoon criticised the acquisition of the vehicles.
He said: ?We are awaiting to see how those recently-commissioned vehicles are going to improve the Fire Services? ability to respond to emergencies, fire calls and flooding.
?We have been calling for fire-fighting units to do the jobs. There are several units that are not working and defective,? said Ramkissoon in a telephone interview.
He said there were no working fire appliances at the Belmont, Woodbrook and Chaguaramas Fire Stations and the tender at the Santa Cruz Fire Station did not pass a vehicle inspection.
He said that Belmont Fire Station was located in a crucial area that covered the Port-of-Spain General Hospital, Port-of-Spain, the President?s residence, the Belmont community, St Ann?s, the Diplomatic Centre and Laventille.
Ramkissoon said members of the association were not invited to attend the event and stood at the nearby building listening to the speeches at the handing- over ceremony.
Acting Chief Fire Officer Roosevelt Bruce said the utility vehicles were bought instead of the fire tenders because they were easier to acquire.
He said specialised fire-fighting equipment had to be imported and took months to acquire.
He added: ?We have vehicles at the stations and some are in need of repairs and we are repairing them now.

Our country in a mess yess 4 mil and nun could fight fire if the wanted vehicles they could ah buy yaris, or some cheap nissan big stupes....only one set ah excuses and i want to know why they need usb and all that luxury....

I would not mind if the stations and supplies were fully updated, functioning, and equipped to fight fires in this country. So many homes and lives are destroyed because of fires when firefighters cannot reach or are not adequately prepared to fight fires. I thought the department may have needed money to fix these issues but it seems they have other priorities.

SUVS and Lexus? They going to put hoses on them? As far as im concerned they just buying vehicles for these people to break the law with and abuse the use of a siren.

I fed up see these fire men with the pick ups breaking some major laws on the roadway, this is jusr rewarding them for their wrong doing.

Really waiting to see how this improves fire service yes.

Look pretty in there car that come with usb factory installed n our fire with water from the washer fluid no worries there dan

Lol we know those cars won't be touching any fiery scenes with a ten foot pole. Maybe it's a new incentive program. More deaths and injuries from fires we can't afford to fight = new shiny cars......because....Trinidad....that's why.

I glad the people have nice SUVS eh but that isnt fighting anything neither serving a real purpose. The only thing they could do is unhook the windshield washer hose and spray down a match with it because thats the only thing that will out.

The luxury cars are to transport the victims of the fire to their desired destination. You can't have them sitting with the fire fighters and it's even better to have the victims of the fire cruise in style and luxury.

Newsflash : The government dont care!

Fires in the mountains or bush fires do not affect them. Firemen are the lowest paid compared to TTPS, Prisions, Coast Guard etc.

I wish people knew the importance of the Fire Department and give them props just like USA. Fire Departments help animals , fallen trees, bomb threat situations etc. and here in Trini, we only send them out for accidents and fires smh

Also note that only a select few will most likely benefit from those new vehicles, the average hard working fire fighter that does their job the way they're supposed to will most likely be shafted and receive the negative aspects of what falls downward.
