Stephano and Antonio Richards were in tears yesterday when their home at Murli Street, La Romaine, came crashing ten feet down from its wooden foundation.

The boys' grandfather, George Tang, 69, told the Sunday Guardian that while he, his daughter and her family will seek shelter at the homes of their relatives, it was only temporary and they need a place to stay until their living situation is rectified. Tang's son Gregory Lalmohan was expected to remain behind. He said they are in dire need of help to rebuild their home.

Before yesterday, the house seemed stable, with only the odd creaking sound of wood. Tang said he was lying on his bed between 1 to 2 pm yesterday while his daughter was washing clothes below the house. The wind blew violently and his son told him that he felt the house shift. His daughter returned inside and within 15 minutes, the sound of wood bending was followed by a crashing sound and the house hitting the ground. The wooden foundation at the back became strained and the entire structure fell.

Thankfully, no one was injured but it left the boys, six and two, traumatised.

“We heard a little rumbling around the house and the house just came down. The front touched the ground first so everything slid. I was on the bed so I held on. I was shocked for a little while because I did not know what was happening until it reached down to the ground. It happened so fast. It took about two minutes. Nobody was injured but the children were crying,” Tang said.

By nightfall, the family of six was still planning their next move and assessing the damage. Tang said the house fell on the washing machine and there were several appliances that were damaged. T&TEC cut the power to the house, so he said he could not say whether the refrigerator works.
