An intruder who was stabbed by a woman after he crawled into her bed has been jailed for three years.

Roderick Sookhan, who claimed he was drunk, was found guilty of burglary and indecent assault at the end of his case in the San Fernando Magistrates’ Court.

The offences took place on March 8, 2014. The woman, then 25, said around 3.30 am she was asleep in bed at her Williamsville home when she felt someone touching her body under her blanket.

She felt a soft touching and her buttocks being squeezed. She said the person took her hand and put it on his private part.

When she glanced over her shoulders she saw the man with a white jersey tied on his head, wearing a long pants and bareback lying next to her.

She quickly turned around and yelled at him. She said the man threatened to stab her with a knife if she moved, but she quickly got up and tried to grab the knife from him.

They began to fight and they ended up in the kitchen area where he pulled her down to the ground. They were still fighting when she managed to take the knife from him and stabbed him in his left shoulder.

She got up and opened her front door. The suspect ran after her and they continued “fighting up” in the driveway. She screamed out for help and her aunt came to her assistance.

The intruder ran off. Later that day he was arrested and charged by PC Noyan.

Sookhan claimed he was drinking and then woke up at the woman’s door. He said he did not know how he got stabbed or how he ended up in the woman’s bed.

Asked by court prosecutor Cleyon Seedan why he ran when he saw the police, Sookhan said he was afraid.

After hearing the evidence, Senior Magistrate Cherril-Anne Antoine convicted and sentenced him to three years on the burglary charge and two and half years on the indecent assault charge.

The sentences were ordered to run concurrently.
