Investigations have been launched into the circumstances in which a suspended police officer suffered severe burns when his car caught fire in South Oropouche yesterday.
The 62-year-old officer is in critical condition at the San Fernando General Hospital with burns to 75 per cent of his body, including his face, hands and upper body.
The officer was seated in the car at around 11 am when it caught on fire. Eyewitnesses said he managed dragged himself out of the car and collapsed in a drain. He was rushed by ambulance to the San Fernando General Hospital where he is warded in the Intensive Care Unit.
The officer has been on suspension following an incident in which he allegedly attacked two relatives on March 18. He was subsequently charged with malicious damage, throwing a flammable liquid, and two counts of assault on two relatives.
He is expected to reappear in court on those charges on August 22.
