SAN DIEGO – A man who broke into a young woman's Ocean Beach apartment while she slept and tried to rape her while on the lam in an East Coast sexual predator case was sentenced Wednesday to six years in state prison and ordered to register as a sex offender.
Abraham Shorey, 25, is suspected of being the “Collegetown Creeper†who sneaked into the bedrooms of at least 20 coeds at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., in 2003 and 2004, poured baby oil on some of them and sexually assaulted others.
New York authorities will now have to decide whether they want to extradite him to the East Coast, said prosecutor Katherine Flaherty.
“The ball is in their court,†she said.
No matter what happens, Shorey would have to serve his prison sentence in California first, the prosecutor said.
Shorey was arrested in the New York case in 2004, but skipped bail. While he was on the run, he was profiled on the “America's Most Wanted†television program.
His days on the lam ended May 5 this year, when Chula Vista police pulled him over for a traffic violation. He was cited and released, and authorities learned several hours later, through fingerprint records, that he had provided false identification and determined that he was wanted in New York.
Later the same day, San Diego's Violent Crime Task Force spotted him in Normal Heights and took him into custody without incident.
He told authorities that he had been trying to make his way to Hawaii to visit his girlfriend and voluntarily agreed to provide a DNA sample, which would link him to the Ocean Beach crime that had occurred nine months before.
The 19-year-old victim of that crime told police she awoke on Aug. 7, 2005, to find a man with a knife on top of her and about to rape her.
The woman bit the defendant's little finger when he put his hand over her mouth, and blood from the wound matched the DNA sample he gave months later, Flaherty said.
The victim's father said his daughter fought for her life for 10 minutes, kicked the knife out of her attacker's hand and ran to the father's residence nearby.
“She saved her own life, basically,†the father said.
He said his daughter – who is away at school in New York – has been traumatized by the event.
Flaherty told Judge David Danielsen that Shorey slashed the screen of the victim's apartment and got a knife from her kitchen.
The prosecutor said the young woman was “courageous beyond belief†as she fought off her attacker, who threatened to kill her if she didn't stop screaming.
Flaherty said Shorey's predatory behavior was “among the most dangerous that we ever see†and “simply too frightening.â€ÂÂÂÂÂÂ
The victim “will never forget†what happened that night, the prosecutor told the judge.
Because the defendant bled on the way out of the victim's apartment, investigators were able to connect him to the crime through the miracle of modern science, the prosecutor said. If not for the DNA evidence, Shorey might not have ever been caught, Flaherty said.
Two other women reported their screens being slashed in the same way and on the same night as the victim's, but they were not awakened, the prosecutor said.
