First Two CNG Maxi Taxis Launched at City Gate

CNG NGC, in collaboration with the Association of Maxi Taxis of Trinidad and Tobago unveiled the the first two CNG-fuelled maxi taxis at City Gate on Thursday.

In 2015, an MOU was signed between NGC CNG and the Association of Maxi Taxis of Trinidad and Tobago (AMTTT) to offer a grant to maxi taxi owners to dispose of their diesel vehicles and switch to CNG. The new CNG vehicles are imported from China from the Jiangsu Joylong Automobile Company. These CNG Joylong vehicles are 18 seaters which is new to the T&T market which has traditionally been served by 15 seaters and 25 seaters.

To access the grant (of $45,000 for a small maxi and $75,000 for a large maxi), owners have to destroy their old diesel powered maxi taxis and procure new Original Equipment Manufactured (OEM) CNG maxi taxis. The first 2 owners to complete the switch over from Diesel to CNG are Messers Lucien Hernandez-Maxwell and Godfrey Flemming.

President of NGC CNG Curtis Mohammed said that the move to CNG-fuelled maxi taxis was a historic one.

“....the first two recipients of the grant, Lucien Hernandez-Maxwell and Godfrey...will go on into the history books as the first two owners of commercial OEM CNG Maxi Taxis in this country. Further, these two vehicles have actually been supplied by the commercial arm of the Association, Routes Auto Limited. So today is indeed historic for the Association and for these owners, as well adding to the success of our mandate to accelerate the use of CNG.

In these austere times, purchasing an OEM CNG vehicle with VAT and Motor Vehicle tax exempted, is an easy choice, with the added benefit of the most affordable fuel available in the country.”

Maxi taxi owners have embraced the switch to CNG, since it represents a 50% savings on their fuel cost (Diesel $1.98/litre, CNG $1.00/litre equivalent). CNG also burns cleaner, thus reducing the intervals for vehicle maintenance.
