Police yesterday said they had a photograph of the smiling man they believe tried to chop to death a couple and their teenage daughter in a daybreak attack at the family's home in San Fernando.
The man was still on the run last night, despite raids on the homes of his mother and grandmother in Rousillac.
The man, a 25-year-old labourer, spent Tuesday night stalking the Diamond Boulevard, Union Estate home of Errol Dhanraj, who lived there with his wife, Zela, and their 16-year-old daughter, Andrea, a pupil of the Lakshmi Girls' Hindu College.
Dhanraj told police he woke that morning, opened his back door, put the kettle on, and sat in the living room to look at a television programme. That was when he heard a sound near the door and went to investigate.
Dhanraj said he was chopped on the head and when his wife ran out of the bedroom she too was chopped.
Andrea Dhanraj awoke and when she stepped out of her bedroom, she was chopped on both arms and head. The family fled the house but the man continued chopping them in the front yard.
A neighbour said she screamed out that she would be calling the police and the man ran to the fence, while the Dhanrajs ran into the house.
The man followed the parents and daughter into the kitchen but ran off soon after.
Errol Dhanraj was released from hospital on Wednesday. His wife and daughter are under police guard at the San Fernando General Hospital.
