For this month students from 35 schools in T&T will participate in the "Our Children Read to their Communities" programme at libraries across the country.

This programme is a culmination of the Leading For Literacy Now! Phase 4 project which is a collaborative effort of the Ministry of Education, the School Leadership Centre, Nalis, the Franciscan Institute, and sponsored by Republic Bank Ltd “Power to make a Difference Program.”

Readings will take place at the Port-of-Spain Children's Library; Sangre Grande, Chaguanas, St James, Couva, Princes Town, Arima, Roxborough, Carnegie Scarborough, Tunapuna, Maloney, St Helena, Moruga, Debe, San Juan and Siparia public libraries.

The Leading for Literacy Now! Phase 4 project, which stresses stakeholder involvement, focuses on teaching foundation literacy skills to infants and ensures that they are well equipped to become competent readers.

Each child participating in the “Our Children Read To Their Communities” will receive medals and a book prize.

The Leading for Literacy Now! project approved by the Ministry of Education seeks to provide principals with leadership skills to work with their infant teachers to improve the reading standards among Infant students in primary schools.

Each year the principals of 40 primary schools are trained in leadership skills by The School Leadership Center and 80 infant teachers in the teaching of beginning reading in a multimodal, multidisciplinary approach by an international professional trainer during one week in the August vacation.

Thus far a cumulative total of 151 principals and 288 infant teachers have been trained, and 6,301 students have learned to read in the first four phases of this project.

The parents of these students are also trained in Parenting for Literacy by the Franciscan Institute in supporting their children's literacy development.
