WHILE her colleagues were celebrating their success in the recent Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE), a disappointed Naparima Girls' High School pupil committed suicide on Thursday night.
Kalyzan Beharry, 18, was discovered hanging from burglar-proofing in her bedroom around 7.45 p.m.
She tied a noose around a metal bar and jumped, police said.
Beharry lived at McConnie Street, Gulf View, La Romaine, with her mother, Karla Singh.
Singh left her daughter at home around 4.45 p.m. to run errands, police said. She returned three hours later to find her only child hanging from a cord. Singh attempted to rescue her daughter, but she was already dead.
The body was removed to the San Fernando General Hospital mortuary, where an autopsy was performed.
The Express visited the family's home yesterday, but no one answered the doorbell. The doors were locked and a car was parked in the driveway.
Naparima Girls' High School principal Patricia Ramgoolam said she was saddened by the news.
"The school, the board, the church, teachers and all of Naparima Girls' are sad right now. It is like losing a member of our family. We have no answers because she was like any other student here," she said.
Ramgoolam said the teenager participated in piano, tennis, life-saving and the President's Award team.
Beharry wrote chemistry, physics, communications studies and pure mathematics in the May examinations. The results were released on Thursday afternoon.
"She passed all of her subjects, so I cannot understand what happened. And I do not want to reveal her results, as this is already a distressing time for the family. This is a challenging time for all of us and I want to extend condolences to the family," Ramgoolam said.
In 2008, another pupil, Martin Joseph, 19, of Beggs Trace, Toco, committed suicide when the CAPE examinations were rescheduled.
Investigators said, however, Beharry was not satisfied with her examination results. San Fernando police are continuing investigations.

Education too dam F#%@% stressful in this country dread.

I got 2,4, 5,6 in my cape subjects, but lucky all that pressure wasn't on me.
But right now I have to pay for maths in costatt because I failed too many tomes lol

too many people are expecting a perfect students, the system isn't perfect, i don't understand how people (parents) could want so much and pressure children so, Passing with straight A's is a false ideal, it's only for show unless you actually use what you learn.. :(

hmmmm this is so sad, you still have your life ahead of you yes you may make mistakes but you should not let that stop you, just get up dust your self out and move on. Their maybe was alot of pressure from her family and other expecting a certain grade

My deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the victim. It is indeed a very difficult time for them all... This can be a wakeup call to all parents out there that expect only perfection in their kids. I'm not saying that this particular girl's parents did that; i'm just generalizing. Yes we all want the best for our kids. We want them to succeed. We want them to be better than us. that's all fine and well, but its unfair to them to have such a burden on their shoulders. These kids constantly dwell on the pressure of making perfect marks cause they worry about dissappointing their parents. They shoudl not have to carry that baggage. As parents, I believe that we ought to expect the best of kids and let them know that if they fall short, its ok. Life goes on. We are not perfect creatures; so perfection should not be expected of us.

This was indeed a very sad news. I urge all the students to not get too stressed out over bad results. If you do bad, you can do good in the next attempt.
