An amputee appeared in court charged with the murder of a Sangre Grande mechanic.

Kevin “Guts” Civilian, 37, appeared before Magistrate Cheron Raphael, in the Sangre Grande Magistrates Court late on Wednesday charged with the murder of Richard Shamme Phillip.

Phillip, 35, of Rampersad Trace, Vega de Oropouche, was shot dead at his workplace on Ramdass Street, Sangre Grande on August 24.

The charge was laid by WPC Ria Timothy of Sangre Grande Criminal Investigations Department following instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions Roger Gaspard.

The accused was arrested moments after the murder. He was also charged with possession of firearm and ammunition.

Standing in front of the magistrate with the aid of a crutches, Civilian shook his head as the murder charge was read to him.

Civilian was remanded into custody at Golden Grove Prison, Arouca and is expected to reappear in court on September 26.
