Eight people were arrested by police yesterday after a hand grenade, a full army camouflage uniform and a kilo of marijuana were seized by officers at a home in Valencia.
According to reports, Central Division Operations Unit officers executed a search at a Castillano Trace, Valencia Old Road, Valencia home around 5 am yesterday.
When the unit, headed by Sgt Haywood and including Cpls Singh and Valley, searched the house, they found the grenade, army uniform, several 9mm rounds of ammunition and the marijuana.
Eight people were arrested and taken to the Chaguanas Police Station.
In an unrelated incident, eight people at a home for the aged at La Canoa, Lower Santa Cruz, were treated for injuries yesterday, after they were stabbed by a mentally ill man who had an episode, entered the compound and attacked them.
Sources said the man, who was yet to be identified up to last evening, went straight onto the compound, located close to Uncle Bedoe’s Supermarket at Dukhan Hill, armed with a knife and stabbed eight residents of the home. Caretakers shouted for assistance and members of the community rushed to the scene and helped subdue the attacker.
The police later responded and he was handed over to the officers, while those who were attacked were initially treated then taken by ambulance to Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope, where they were treated for the stab wounds.
The man was arrested and remains in police custody. However, he is expected to be taken to the St Ann’s Hospital for further observation.
Police said the stab injuries were not life-threatening but the persons attacked and the caretakers were left traumatised.
