He could not find the money demanded by robbers, so they shot 18-year-old Vishal Satesh Sookoo to death near his home in Preysal on Saturday.
Sookoo, of Crystal Avenue, died in the arms of his brother, Naresh, while waiting for treatment at the Couva District Hospital, the Express was told.
The family said police took too long to get to the crime scene and the hospital authorities did not move fast enough to help the teenager.
Sookoo, a hardware employee, was sitting on a stack of crates with a friend near his home around midnight when several men walked up, police were told.
One man asked Sookoo for the money. His friend ran. Sookoo was shot twice in the lower abdomen, and ran to a neighbouring yard, collapsing in the bushes. It was his brother who went in search of Sookoo.
Police are unsure whether the crime was a random act of violence or if Sookoo was the target.
