One man was killed and another injured in a shooting in Carenage early yesterday morning.

According to reports, around 2.15 am David Coltes, of Western Main Road, Carenage, was liming with relatives and friends at an apartment building at Smith Hill, Carenage, when they were approached by a gunman.

The gunman shot at the group and wounded Coltes and his 18-year-old friend Jadel Slater, of Majuba Cross Road, Petit Valley. The attacker then ran into an awaiting vehicle and drove away.

Both men were taken to the St James Medical Complex where Coltes was pronounced dead on arrival. Slater, who was shot once in his leg, was stabilised and transferred to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital, where he remained warded up to late yesterday.

Although Homicide detectives said that Coltes was not known to police, they believe he was the target as he had several relatives who are suspected of criminal and gang activity.

In an unrelated incident, a 26-year-old woman was wounded by a stray bullet in a shooting in east Port-of-Spain yesterday morning. Police said the unidentified woman was sitting in the verandah of her apartment at Nelson Street when she heard a series of gunshots coming from Calvary Hill, East Dry River.

As she attempted to go inside she was struck in her right arm. The woman was taken to hospital where she was treated and discharged. Police believe that a high-powered assault rifle was used in the shooting based on the distance between the two communities.

Investigations are continuing.
